Oil painting of a young woman picking apples in a sunlit garden

Ābeļdārzs

Oil painting on stretched canvas 70 x 80 cm, painted in 2025 by artist Mārtiņš Virsis.

While the story of the inspiration behind the painting is not an exceptional tale for a personal struggle, sentimental feeling or a commentary about the state of the world, it has its own distinct voice. The style is heavily influenced by old masters’ paintings with a slightly dreamy feeling.

“I am always admiring how Mārtiņš creates his paintings from the tiniest details to the fully realised work. However, this is one of those rare paintings I fell in love with while he was painting it. He started with the detailed colour placements and moved further for the big picture, and I am still mesmerized when looking at the snapshots from the process – it looked finished before it was even close to being finished.” – Ieva Virse sharing her view on the painting process.

The Apple Orchard has been a subject of many compositions already, but surprisingly, it hasn’t found its home yet. Further, a picture with the artist and the Apple Orchard.
